Massive Upgrade at the Fonatur Roundabout in San José del Cabo

by Info Ownincabo

San José del Cabo is leveling up its infrastructure game—and not just to impress tourists. The Fonatur roundabout redevelopment, officially launched in May 2025, is a bold push to reduce traffic congestion, enhance pedestrian safety, and turbocharge mobility along the Cabo corridor. By mid‑2026, this project aims to deliver a whole new driving (and walking) experience in Baja California Sur.

Why This Project Matters

The Fonatur roundabout handles an average of 48,000+ vehicles per day, soaring past 50,000 on busy days, and serving about 2.6 million annual tourists plus 350,000+ locals. Freight delays, gridlock, airport traffic—this spot has it all. SICT and local authorities are investing 469 million pesos (roughly USD 24–25 million) to get things moving again.

What’s Being Built?

Here’s what the project includes:

  • A 1.5 km underpass (aka “paso a desnivel”) with four lanes—two in each direction—to allow through‑traffic to bypass the chaos above.

  • A signalized roundabout on the surface to organize local traffic cleanly.

  • A 3,000 m² bike lane looping around the roundabout, connecting to the hotel zone.

  • Nearly 19,500 m² of new sidewalks and 17 crosswalks, plus an inclusive pedestrian bridge for safe foot traffic.

  • Green upgrades: relocating hundreds of native plants and restoring 24,000 m² of green areas for locals and visitors alike.

This isn’t just a road fix—it’s a bold step toward mobility, sustainability, and accessibility.

Timeline & Progress

  • Start date: mid‑May 2025.

  • Estimated completion: 13–14 months later, targeting June–July 2026.

  • Jobs created: about 496 direct and nearly 2,000 indirect positions, with crews working two shifts, day and night, seven days a week.

Local officials say progress is a bit ahead of schedule, and they’re optimistic—even aiming to finish faster if all goes well.

Minimizing the Chaos: What’s Happening Now

Yes, construction has strained local traffic—and locals are not thrilled. Some drivers report trips from La Ballena to the roundabout taking hours instead of minutes.

Despite promises of maintained mobility, only two lanes remain open, and detours are limited.

To manage the mess, authorities are deploying a slew of measures:

  • Weekly coordination meetings involving city officials, police, emergency services, and contractors.

  • Real-time traffic monitoring via cameras, enabling flexible lane assignments (e.g. three inbound lanes in the morning).

  • A new online portal (movilidad.loscabos.gob.mx) offering live updates and alternative route suggestions.

  • On-ground guidance from traffic officers and even the National Guard.

Tips for Drivers & Tourists

  • Expect delays: Plan extra travel time, especially to the airport.

  • Use the portal: Check movilidad.loscabos.gob.mx before heading out.

  • Consider side roads: Less scenic, maybe, but potentially faster.

  • Stay cool: Bring music, iced coffee—or cultivate calm patience. This too shall become smoother.

The Bottom Line

The Fonatur roundabout overhaul is a transformative infrastructure project designed to relieve bottlenecks, enhance safety, and support sustainable mobility in San José del Cabo. Despite the current disruptions, its completion around mid‑2026 promises a future where cruising from the airport to your resort—or just getting around town—is faster, safer, and more enjoyable. Let’s cheer for progress—even if it comes with a few potholes and delays first.
